Mindfulness & meditation... the driving force that leads life to meaning and happiness.
If we speak of 'happiness' in a profound way, everyone will understand that a person's inner state has a greater impact than their external circumstances. Therefore, the degree to which a person experiences happiness depends on training their mind to adjust their attitudes and perspectives. This is equivalent to developing the ability to discover happiness for oneself. A simple yet effective tool, universally applicable and currently trending globally, is mindfulness practice through breath awareness techniques.
One of the strengths of Thailand's deeply ingrained knowledge of mindfulness is its ability to clearly differentiate between awareness and concentration (samadhi). This leads to more effective utilization of both. Considering the principles, mechanisms, and techniques through real-life practice, it becomes clear that concentration is a state of conscious awareness, while mindfulness is a state of focused activity, undisturbed by emotions. Therefore, they are distinct states with different mechanisms. The mechanism of concentration is to be fully aware of the breath to halt thoughts, while the mechanism of mindfulness is to be slightly aware of the breath, keeping it present and mindful of both external and internal activities. These two states complement each other; when the mind emerges from concentration, it becomes easier to cultivate mindfulness, and consistent mindfulness practice makes concentration less difficult.
By reflecting on tangible results, we discover meaning in many everyday things and, of course, experience greater happier lives. For example, mindful eating leads to weight loss, mindful shopping encourages careful spending, and mindfulness helps us enjoy exercise and even difficult tasks more. Above all, learning mindfulness develops our ability to change our way of thinking and, importantly, fosters a more positive outlook.
Human society serves as a crucial testing ground for the mind. The practice of mindfulness and meditation helps to open the practitioner's heart to true inner happiness—an unconditional happiness that is peaceful, balanced, filled with love, compassion, reduced prejudice, and characterized by inspiration and creativity.
Beyond personal skills, isn't it true that a high-quality mindset allows individuals to connect their lives and work more effectively? As we know, more than half of people's lives today are spent at work. Therefore, if the work environment is a source of stress and frustration, it's as if we've lost half our lives. Since work and life are inseparable, the MIO (Mindfulness in Organization) project, a model organization developing mindfulness as a way of life and culture, uses mindfulness and meditation as the core of its curriculum to design a 'work style' in exemplary organizations. The goal is for every workday to be a time for simultaneous mindfulness development, leading to happier employees, reduced stress, improved relationships with colleagues, and ultimately, the realization that work truly enriches life.
Every employee is the most valuable asset. Organizations that prioritize developing the 'inner potential' of their personnel help them unleash their passion and potential to the fullest, connecting that power to create strong teams that drive the organization towards its goals, which go beyond mere survival and profit. Mindfulness and concentration play a crucial role in creating happiness at the individual level, while simultaneously having the power to create happiness at the organizational level and ultimately extending to global society.
